寿山石为人所重始于清初，在文彭以青田石入印之后，作为另一种印材被发掘的。石头 被引入印材，是玩石赏石的一个命运转折点，之前一直被诟病的“太软”忽然一百八十度大转弯成为了最大的优点，以刀奏石的利落爽脆、得尽笔情墨意使得文人们 纷纷追捧。
陈子奋的《寿山石小志》所录：“高山为寿山之最高峰，清乾隆时开始采掘。有大健洞、世元洞、嫩嫩洞等，皆因采石人之名而名，又有和尚洞、大洞、水洞、新洞、啼嘛洞、四股四、油白等洞……”可见其开采历史之久。
