青白釉質色白淡雅、釉面明澈麗潔，色澤溫潤如玉。
是北宋時期主要的陶瓷品種之一，江西、福建、河南等地眾多窯口都有燒造，
尤以景德鎮湖田窯所產為最佳。
史料記載唐初即有人將湖田窯出產的青白瓷器送入宮中，稱為「饒玉」，是中國最早的貢瓷之一。
這只壺為瓜棱型壺腹，一彎流口，瓜蒂圓蓋，肩部溜滑，流和柄位於壺肩上部，相互對稱，體態修長而又不失豐滿；通體施青白釉，色泛白，各部分銜接處由於積釉而帶水綠色，明澈溫潤，青素淡雅，充分反映了宋人的審美觀。
宋代理學盛行，文人士大夫都以儒學為立身之本，講求修身養性，崇尚自然，「天然去雕飾」，含蓄氣內斂。這種背景也反映在北宋瓷器，無一不是以色調單純，形制優雅而為世所珍。
無怪乎湖田窯青白釉器曾風靡一時，據宋人《東京夢華錄》記載，當時京都汴梁與臨安都有專門出售青白瓷的店鋪。李清照《醉花陰》詞中有「玉枕紗廚，半夜涼初透」之句，玉枕指的就是青白瓷枕。
