「mokume」意為木材的眼睛，「gane」的意思是金屬，
木紋金基本原理就是將各種顏色、不同的金屬，透過重疊之後再高溫高壓之下熔融，之後經過鍛打，扭轉，鋸銼等工藝技法，使不同金屬顏色層層疊加呈現出漂亮的肌理紋路，巧妙用金屬的色澤製作出木材紋理的視覺效果。
是一種起源於17世紀的日本的金屬工藝，距今已有四百多年的歷史，最初的原型來自中國堆漆工藝。日本江戶時代初期，從出羽秋田住正阿彌傳兵衛製作的俱利雕刻護手開始了木紋金的歷史。
