Purple Clay Palace Lantern Teapot

Purple Clay Palace Lantern Teapot
Purple Clay Palace Lantern Teapot
Vessel type: Palace Lantern Teapot
Author: Dayatang
Material: Purple clay
The design of palace lanterns originated during the reign of Emperor Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty. They are classical, beautiful, and elegant.
This teapot incorporates elements of "Duozhi," "Baochun," and "Gongdeng" (palace lanterns), striking a perfect balance. The overall design captures the rounded fullness of a palace lantern, with a bulging body and a slightly inward-curving shoulder line, resembling the drooping eaves of a lantern. The lines flow smoothly from shoulder to base, maintaining a sense of solemnity while displaying elegance. The domed lid paired with a small, upright beaded knob echoes the rounded contours of the body. The spout curves slightly, and the handle has a natural, drooping arc, resulting in balanced proportions and an inherently dignified air.
The purple clay teapot has a warm chestnut brown color and a smooth, delicate sandy texture. The body of the teapot is engraved with calligraphy and paintings, and the engravings are of appropriate depth and shallowness, which makes the surface of the clay undulate with light and shadow. It adds a more elegant visual layer than the plain palace lantern, just like the fine brushwork patterns on the gauze of the palace lantern.
