Carmine red glaze was first created in the late Kangxi period. It is a low-temperature red glaze introduced from Europe, then known as "foreign golden red" or "western red". The firing reached its peak in both refinement and production volume during the Yongzheng reign. After the Qianlong period and until the late Qing Dynasty, the glaze quality gradually declined.
Carmine red is a low-temperature red glaze fired with gold as the colorant, typically at temperatures between 800°C and 850°C. Gold exists in the glaze in a colloidal state, resulting in a pinkish tone after low-temperature firing. Depending on the depth of color, it can be classified into "carmine purple", "carmine water", and "pale pink".
Typically, a refined white porcelain body is first fired. The glaze slurry is then evenly applied to the body using a spraying or blowing technique, before being fired in a low-temperature kiln. This application method ensures a uniform and delicate glaze layer. Due to the thinness of the glaze, extremely high requirements are placed on the quality of the porcelain body.
Carmine red porcelain is primarily used for small objects such as small bowls, vases, high-foot cups, and chrysanthemum-petal dishes. Most pieces feature a white glaze on the interior and carmine red on the exterior; examples with carmine red on both sides are extremely rare. The porcelain body is lightweight, delicate, and elegant, with beautifully curved contours.
