author: Dayatang
Material 1:
Red Sandalwood(common name)
Pterocarpus santalinus(Latin name)
Material 2:
African Blackwood(common name)
Dalbergia melanoxylon(Latin name)
Specification:
Chair: Length: 63cm, Width: 50cm, Height: 101cm
side table: Length: 40cm; Width: 50cm; Height: 69cm
This imperial palace chair is a round-backed chair with a waisted waist, a base, and highly ornate carvings. The prototype is housed in the Palace Museum Furniture Gallery in Beijing. The backrest is a three-section frame; the upper section is carved with openwork floral patterns, a variation of the scrollwork design; the middle section is inlaid with a single burl wood panel from Burmese rosewood; and the lower section features exposed legs with an outline resembling an inverted bat. Four large, openwork corner braces are used where the backrest, armrest, and seat meet, enhancing the decorative effect when viewed from the front. The armrests and the area above the hoof-shaped feet are also decorated with openwork scrollwork patterns, a rather unique technique. The seat, made from a single, split plank of wood, is even more valuable. This imperial palace chair departs from the simple and elegant style of the plain round-backed chairs of the Ming dynasty, yet retains the core principle of comfort, exuding an air of elegance and leisure.
