Ball flower patterns evolved from round flower motifs, a porcelain decorative art that combines abstraction and figuration. Rather than representing one specific kind of flower, it is a decorative technique that stylizes various floral patterns into unified round or hexagonal lozenge shapes, just like colorful little balls. Some clusters are grouped together, while others are scattered freely. The vessel is fully covered with irregular round flowers, which appear spontaneous yet retain the classic symmetric structure of traditional Chinese art.

Ball flower patterns gained great popularity during the Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns of the Qing Dynasty. They were deeply loved by porcelain collectors for their bright and vivid doucai (contending-color) palette. The rich and diverse colors of Qing-dynasty famille rose and doucai porcelains helped the ball flower pattern flourish and spread widely.
