Sacrificial Red is a legendary and notoriously difficult-to-fire red glaze. A Jingdezhen proverb goes: “Burn Sacrificial Red, and you’ll end up poor”—a testament to its extremely low success rate.

Sacrificial Red has always existed as a rare, precious, and almost mystical material. Rooted in fine art, it has also become an enduring subject in Chinese literature.

This Sacrificial Red Water Pot with Plum Blossom Motif was hand-painted by Master Zhang Jian, a renowned artist of Jingdezhen’s overglaze enamel and raised-gilding techniques. Master Zhang once created the Longevity Dragon Vase on behalf of Jingdezhen to celebrate the birthday of President Hu Jintao.

It bears the six-character, three-line seal mark “Made in the Qianlong Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty”—strict yet gracefully spontaneous, imbued with a touch of earthly warmth and free-spirited elegance. The mark’s style aligns with fine civilian kiln masterpieces of the Qianlong period. Crafted with archaic-style body clay and a thick, lustrous glaze, it exudes timeless elegance on a tea table.

A dream in the mortal world, sunset glow and winter snow—soft rosy clouds and delicate snowflakes settle on plum branches. Gnarled trunks, slanting shadows, and subtle fragrance drift in the air.

Master Zhang remarked: “Sacrificial Red is also a form of kiln transformation. Look here—one side glows like freshly congealed chicken blood, while the other fades into a misty, ethereal blue‑gray haze…”

I replied: “That is precisely what I love. It feels both divine and human-made; it is the variation that makes it so beautiful.”

Q: Is the pink blush along the snow‑plum edges painted or translucent?

A (Master Zhang): Only pure white is used. The pink gradient at the edges is the Sacrificial Red glaze shining through.
