Enamel-Decorated Lidded Bowl with Auspicious Blessings,

This enamel-decorated lidded bowl is a collaborative work by Master Zhang Jian, a master craftsman specializing in Jingdezhen overglaze decoration and piled gold technique, together with several other master artisans. Its porcelain painting features lines as fine as hair, of extraordinary delicacy.

The exterior of the lidded bowl is painted with iron-red bats, a traditional auspicious pattern symbolizing boundless good fortune.

Auspicious Blessings Unfolding Continuously

Bats are regarded as a symbol of good fortune, known as "fortune omens". In Confucianism, they are seen as auspicious signs reflecting divine will, alongside colorful clouds, favorable weather, double-eared crops, sweet springs emerging from the earth, and the appearance of rare birds and exotic animals.

The bowl has a pale pinkish-green ground glaze, with an elegant, soft green hue and a gentle, mellow luster.

Scrolling Branch Pattern

The exterior is adorned with enamel-decorated scrolling branch patterns, with clear leaf veins. The winding branches and leaves are graceful, dynamic and flowing.

Thanks to their continuous, unbroken structure, they carry the meaning of endless vitality.

The combination of bat patterns and scrolling branch patterns signifies auspicious blessings unfolding continuously.

Enamel Porcelain

Beyond its intricate and exquisite painting, the Guyuexuan Palace Lantern teapot requires four separate kiln firings to complete, with the risk of damage in each firing.

In the Qing Dynasty, enamel porcelain was originally a treasure made exclusively for emperors and empresses. Enamel is a special colored pigment produced by artificial firing.

Before the 6th year of the Yongzheng reign (1728), enamel materials had to be imported from Europe. After that year, the Imperial Workshop of the Qing Court successfully developed more than 20 kinds of enamel pigments on its own.

Enamel porcelain represents the pinnacle of ancient Chinese polychrome porcelain craftsmanship.
