African Blackwood Official's Hat Chair,Back Panel Inlaid with Burl Wood and Marble

This chair is a reproduction of a piece formerly in the collection of the renowned connoisseur Mr. Zhang Dexiang. The original is a large-sized huanghuali Four-protruding Official's Hat Chair, which is documented on page 88 of Qing Dynasty Furniture by Tian Jiaqing.

In structure and form, this chair is identical to the traditional Suzhou-style Four-protruding Official's Hat Chair. However, it boasts a more imposing scale and enhanced ornamentation. The back panel is constructed in a framed-panel style and divided into three sections: the upper section is inlaid with marble, the middle section with burl wood, and the lower section features an arched "open spandrel" (kumen liangjiao). On both sides of the back panel are undulating decorative apron rails. Wider and taller than those of conventional chairs, the back panel is crafted into an S-shape that conforms to the natural curve of the human spine, ensuring superior comfort.
