Ball flower patterns originated from round flower motifs, a porcelain decoration that blends abstraction and figuration. It does not denote one specific flower, but a decorative style that transforms various flowers into stylized forms. Different floral patterns are unified into round or hexagonal shapes, just like colorful small balls—some clustered together, others scattered freely. The whole body is covered with irregular round flowers, which look spontaneous yet follow the classic symmetric layout of traditional Chinese art.

Ball flower patterns flourished during the Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns of the Qing Dynasty. They were deeply favored by porcelain collectors for their bright and varied doucai (contending-color) palette. The rich and diverse colors of Qing-dynasty famille rose and doucai porcelains helped the ball flower pattern gain wide popularity.
