Guyuexuan Longevity Lantern Lidded Bowl,
The Guyuexuan Longevity Lantern Lidded Bowl is a collaborative creation by Master Zhang Jian, a master craftsman of Jingdezhen overglaze decoration and piled gold technique, together with several other master artisans.
In the realm of enamel porcelain, the most elaborate and intricate decorative style is known in the industry as Guyuexuan. The porcelain painting on this lidded bowl features lines as fine as silk thread — such exquisitely divine brushwork that one would think it required a magnifying glass to create.

This shape was designed by Zhao Qingtao, the owner of Dayatang Studio, based on the classic forms of Qing Dynasty lidded bowls. It is slightly smaller in size, as it was made exclusively for ladies’ use.
Only two sets were custom-produced: one pair in pink and one pair in blue. This is an utterly rare, one-of-a-kind work, and the piece shown here is in blue tone.

Lantern Pattern
The lantern pattern is an auspicious motif. Hanging lanterns is a traditional custom to pray for the family to have more children and greater prosperity. Lanterns are hung during Chinese festivals and joyous occasions, with the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month.

In many Chinese dialects, the word for “lantern” (dēng) sounds the same as “male heir” (dīng). Thus “lighting a lantern” implies “adding a male heir”. For this reason, in some regions, people believe women walking under lanterns will be blessed with many children.

Scrolling Branch Pattern
The exterior is decorated with enamel-painted longevity characters and scrolling lotus, with clear and distinct leaf veins. The winding lotus vines are graceful, dynamic and flowing, matched with brilliant colours, and accented with golden string patterns.

As its structure stretches continuously without interruption, it symbolises endless vitality. For this reason, the scrolling branch pattern is also known as the Longevity Vine.

The lantern pattern flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The scrolling branch pattern originated around the Han Dynasty and prevailed in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.

Enamel Porcelain
Beyond its intricate and delicate painting, the Guyuexuan Palace Lantern lidded bowls and teapots require four separate kiln firings to complete, with the risk of damage in each firing.

In the Qing Dynasty, enamel porcelain was originally a rare treasure made exclusively for emperors and empresses. Enamel is a special coloured pigment made by artificial firing.Before the 6th year of the Yongzheng reign (1728), enamel materials had to be imported from Europe. After that year, the Imperial Workshop of the Qing Court successfully developed more than 20 kinds of enamel pigments on its own.
Enamel porcelain represents the pinnacle of ancient Chinese polychrome porcelain craftsmanship.
